72 C10 Fuel Gauge Wont Read Full

  1. Hi all. I'm new to this forum and take a long-standing issue I'd like some communication on please. I have a '72 GMC one/ii-ton pickup with a cab mounted fuel tank. 10 years or and so ago, my dad had this truck before passing on. I got information technology from him. He had replaced the fuel tank sending unit of measurement at a local dealer because the gauge quit working. Information technology then worked for a short time before no longer working again. Later I inherited information technology, I removed the sending unit of measurement and discovered that the float was totally shot. I replaced the float and the tank registered i/two-tank. I ordered a new sending unit of measurement from (at that time) Chevy Duty and replaced information technology. The gauge registered ane/ii-tank when full for awhile and now registers zip even when full. I have performed the usual checks. With the wire disconnected, the estimate goes to full. The wiring appears to be fine. I've been told on other forums that information technology has to be a grounding outcome. I've tried grounding the tank direct to the frame and cypher changes. I run across no footing wire from the tank to a ground. The merely wire is to the fuse block and on to the judge. I remember the sending unit grounds to the tank by virtue of contact with the locking ring. I could endeavor removing the sending unit again and moving the arm in its total range of motion to encounter if the gauge goes to total, simply I can't assist but think the problem is in the fuel gauge. Before ordering a replacement, I'd like to hear whether or non you recollect that is the problem or if I should exist looking elsewhere. When my dad had the truck, someone installed an after-marketplace bed tank and there is a lever inside the cab that switched the tank from the master to the auxilliary tank and the gauge worked for that. When that auv tank was removed, someone cut the wires, merely I'yard not seeing whatsoever issue there and I would think if that was the source of the trouble, the judge would non take registered at all when it went to 1/two tank on full and when removing the sending unit wire from the unit, it would not move the judge to full. I'd capeesh any advice. This is a constant source of frustration not being able to use the approximate. Thanks in advance for your input. Rick
  2. I Have A 69 C10 When I Bought The Truck The Man Said That He Had The Fuel Gauge Sending Unit Replaced At Chevorlet Garage And Information technology Worked For A While And Then It Quit Working. I Checked Everything I Could And Could Not Observe Anything Incorrect. I Then Took The Sending Unit of measurement Out Of The Tank And Found Out That The Float Had A Pivot Pigsty In It And The Float Was Full Of Gas. I Replaced Information technology And Everything Works Fine.
  3. Been there, washed that. I had to replace the float the commencement time around too. This last time, the bladder is fine, so that'due south not the issue.
  4. Unplug wire off the sender and footing it while watching the gauge (with key on, of course) estimate should swing one fashion or the other. If information technology does wiring etc should be ok. I'd guess you lot may have a problem at the nuance gauge, somewhere in the printed circuit. The only other thought would be the tank that was removed at the frame. Did it have a switch that switched both the sending units and the tanks? If information technology had a switch for the sending units and information technology'southward yet there yous might be chasing that problem. Skillful luck...Mike
  5. Thanks Mike. I will see what I can practise to follow the wiring. I accept already washed the first thing ytou mentioned and with the sending unit of measurement wire disconnected and grounded, the estimate goes all the way to the right. I accept thought all along that in that location must be a wire that connects somehow to the guess from the old bed tank because my mom told me the fuel gauge registered for the aux tank when dad switched information technology over. I haven't institute a switch anywhere, simply will attempt tracing wires. If that doesn't piece of work, information technology sounds like the side by side option is to buy a new gauge and replace it or the circuit board.
  6. I'1000 starting to think there are Gremlins in my truck. I tried removing the sending unit wire and grounding it. The gauge went to total when I pulled the wire and so to empty when I grounded the wire. Now when I reattached it to the sending unit, it swings to past Full and stays at that place which is just the opposite of what it was doing earlier the test. So instead of the gauge moving, it now stays on total with the sending unit wire on and also when I remove information technology. I even tried running a basis wire jumper from the tank straight to the negative battery post. Nix changed. Would this nevertheless indicate a bad sending unit or is information technology the gauge? Or did I fry the gauge running the examination? Sure wish I knew a little more about automotive electricity! I bought the sending unit from Classic Parts merely a few months ago and it has never changed anything. This is the third sending unit in near 10 years and the approximate still refuses to office. It really sounds like a footing, but you'd think a straight connect to the battery would resolve that. Is it possible that the original gauge doesn't lucifer the ohms of the new sending unit of measurement? The unit of measurement I removed last fourth dimension is a 90 ohm and I didn't check the last 1 I installed. I'k trying to find a solution short of pulling the seat out over again and removing the sending unit. Last of all, what would cause the gauge to read Total all the time now since the examination of grounding the sending unit wire? Is this a typical thing to have happen after that exam? Thanks for the assist folks.
  7. The wire to the sending unit of measurement must not be making a good connection considering it is the aforementioned indication if the wire is off on the sending unit of measurement.
Likewise, make sure the sending unit is centered properly in the opening of the tank. If not centered properly, information technology may be grounding out on the tank. I noticed on my 72 Chevy that it was like shooting fish in a barrel for the sending unit to be off to ane side or the other and not centered in the pigsty.
